Preventing and Dealing With Identity Theft

It is a sad fact of life in the modern world: identity theft is very common. It need not mean that someone is going around pretending to be you in every part of your life. It probably just means they are using your credit card, or some other sort of financial imposter activity, but it can mean worse.

Even a simple card identity theft can cause months of heart ache and financial loss. If your credit card is stolen, or even just your credit card details, you could face substantial charges on your credit cards that did not authorize; or ATM withdrawals from your bank account.

Worse cases of identity theft do occur though, and it is even possible for someone else to take out new loans in your name. The thief may then default, in fact, they almost certainly will. That will eventually destroy your good credit record, and you may have rejected credit applications because of your new and unfair bad credit record.

This sort of identity theft happens all over the US and other countries nowadays. The victims are often unaware for some time, and by the time they find out. it is too late to prevent maybe years of problems trying to put things right. Identity theft can be a very unpleasant experience.

While it is not possible for 100% protection against identity theft, there are a few precautions you can take that will help you to prevent identity theft, or at least minimize the damage if you become a victim:

Guard Your Information Against Identity Theft

You should always be on guard if anyone asks you for your personal information, and always try to give them the minimum amount possible. For example, some people may ask for your bank account number in order to process an application, but since that information can do a lot of harm if in the wrong hands, you should try to negotiate and offer other information instead. If they insist and you are still suspicious, then stop processing the application to be sure. In addition, unless you have called a phone number of a reputable company to place an order, never, ever give out any personal information over the phone. It is the most popular way for thieves to get hold of personal information.

Do Not Carry Too Much Of Your Personal Information With You

Never carry a lot of credit cards, bank statements and other personal information with you. Potentially, the more the thief has, the more damage they can do using your identity. You should aim to carry only what's necessary for your excursion.

Keep Good Records To Follow Up Identity Theft

If you have your credit cards stolen, and you have kept a good record of them all, with contact numbers, then you can do a great deal to minimise damage by calling all the credit card companies immediately. They will stop any further transactions and save you an awful lot of grief.

Check Your Bank and Credit Card Statements Thoroughly

If try to make sure you check your bank and credit card statements thoroughly. That way you can pick up cases of identity theft early; if you can check online, that is even better.
