Cutting Costs to Keep Within Budget

Many people these days only think of their household budget from the spending side, omitting to properly attend to the income side and then compare the two. Then if they run out of money, they borrow. Such misbudgeting is not sustainable in the long run, and leads to serious debt problems and bankruptcy.

To budget properly, you need to be fully aware of what your income is and the detail of your monthly expenditure. If you are short on the income side, you can either work at another part time job to get the extra money, or cut your costs. Cutting your costs is not anywhere as difficult as you may think, and is largely a matter of attitude. Here are a few tips to being more thrifty on the spending side of your budget:

1. Try getting together with friends and neighbors to buy in bulk every month. There are bound to be items you all share, so savings can be made.

2. Try to get out of the "must buy new" way of thinking. Repairing household items and putting off the purchase of a new replacement can save you money

3. Buy second hand when you can, by checking out classified ads and online auctions.

4. Do not get hooked on brand names. The quality is not likely to be better, and you are paying too much to cover massive advertising. There is nothing clever about having a brand name displayed on your clothes, for example. That is just free advertising for the brand, and you pay extra for the privilege.

5. When opportunities arise, barter and negotiate for better prices. Sometimes it does work, even in the US and Europe. It definitely works in Asia.

6. Shop around carefully when buying anything.

7. Cut out junk food of all types. Not only is it bad for your health, putting up medical costs in many cases, the prices are also inflated for what you get, thus hurting your budget.

8. Do not be drawn by expensive packaging. You can save money by going for simple packaging, or no packaging at all.

9. Going to a show or cinema on a date? Try going in the afternoon, when the prices are cheaper, and then having a relaxing evening at home together.

10. Do not desire something just because a neighbor has it, or do something just because a friend has done it. Be yourself, live your own life, and live it within budget, and within your means.
